Degree Programs

We believe that Entrepreneurship is for Everyone.  Whether you want to own your own business, innovate within a small business or corporation, or be a socialpreneur, the Entrepreneurship Minor, Graduate Certificate, and Graduate degree will help students gain the skills they need to navigate the future workplace after college!

Entrepreneurship Minor

The Entrepreneurship Minor at UMBC complements every major by helping students learn how to be problem-solvers and think outside the box.  The lessons learned in Entrepreneurship can apply to owning one’s own business, being an intrapreneur and enacting change within an organization, or pursuing a socialpreneurship venture, which focuses on starting a business aimed at addressing a need in society.

The Minor in Entrepreneurship and Innovation consists of 18 credits

2 Core Courses (3 credits each)

ENTR 200, Introduction to Entrepreneurship: provides an overview of the basic concepts of entrepreneurship and innovation focusing on the nature, environment, and risks of new venture formation.  Students will write a business or social entrepreneurial proposal.

ENTR 201, The Entrepreneurial Mindset: introduces students to the attributes of thinking like an innovative entrepreneur, and guides them, using real-life problems, to acquire personal attributes shared by successful social innovators and business entrepreneurs.  Whether a student starts their own business or works for a start-up, understanding how businesses are run, what customers need, and how to problem-solve and think outside the box are skills employers are looking for.

4 Elective Courses (3 credits each)

Students need to take four elective courses from a selection of over 60 elective courses that draw from departments across the campus. Six credits must be at the 300 or 400 level.

Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Leadership Program

UMBC’s EIL program is different than others in the region. It focuses on the critical role that innovation and leadership play in driving your entrepreneurial vision. Through applied learning, course deliverables, and a unique 2-part capstone, the program equips students with practical and relevant skills that can be applied immediately on the job.

UMBC offers both a graduate certificate and Master’s in Professional Studies (M.P.S.) degree.  Undergraduate students can opt to accelerate the pursuit of either a certificate in Entrepreneurship or an MPS by taking 6 or 9 credits respectively while attending as an undergraduate student.

Students can earn a graduate certificate in Entrepreneurship, Innovation, or Leadership.  Each certificate consists of 12 credits, which can be applied to the Master’s in Professional Studies degree if a student chooses to pursue further study.
